Photographing the Northumberland Coastline at Druridge Bay
A one-shot shoot, but a nice afternoon out and I scouted a perfect blue-hour location for a morning in summer
I nearly didn’t go out today. Staying at home is the easy option, and excuses to stay there are plentiful to find – too windy for the woods, too crowded for the beach on a bank holiday; the list goes on… I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t go out, though, and I’m glad that I did, even though I only got one shot!
I called in at Cresswell beach first. Nothing appealed. The golden sands were lovely, but, being just before high-tide, footprints were everywhere. I found some nice rock formations covered in seaweed but there were no obvious subject on the horizon, meaning all the compositions I tried-out looked empty in the top-half of the frame.
I drove a bit further north to Druridge Bay and took the shot below:
This one worked, I think. It’s 2 shots combined: a long exposure for the sea and the sky, and then a quicker one for the foreground. There are lots of footprints on the beach, but it doesn’t matter too much since they’re so far away.
Now back at home, I’ve studied the location using the Sun Surveyor app. I think it should be a good location for sunrise and set set too. 3am start on 21st June it is!
